Thursday, March 31st, 2011 | Author: admin

school physical $20Kids from preschool through high school should have annual physicals. The basics of a back-to-school physical start with the routine exam based on guidelines set by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Paramount Urgent Care Physicians take this opportunity to do a comprehensive check of your child’s body. This usually includes recording height and weight, taking blood pressure and pulse readings, and checking heart and lungs, abdomen, as well as skin, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, teeth and throat.

The doctor will also screen for scoliosis, hernia and overall level of physical maturity. Reflexes, fine-motor development (such as tying shoes) and gross-motor development (such as jumping) is usually on the docket as well.

Blood Sugar Screenings
Monday, February 14th, 2011 | Author: admin

Come in today to meet our friendly staff and get your FREE Blood Sugar Screening.

A blood sugar screening is important because an elevated blood sugar is associated with diabetes and the incidence of diabetes is rising in the American population. Currently, that number is 8 percent of the American population is diagnosed with diabetes and that number is rising.

Diabetes is associated with a variety of diseases including heart disease and stroke, but is also a leading cause of blindness, limb amputations and kidney disease. According to the American Diabetes Association, it’s recommended that all men who are considered overweight by their body mass index be screened for diabetes, and everyone else over the age of 45. And we normally do this with a fasting blood sugar level, and a number above 126 milligrams per deciliter that’s confirmed on a repeated test is diagnostic of diabetes.

A number between 100 and 126 can be considered impaired fasting glucose, in which case lifestyle modifications such as improving diet, weight loss and exercise can also be done to treat that, and that test is repeated after one year. If everything is normal, it’s recommended that we screen for diabetes at least every three years.

    Influenza Tips
    Sunday, January 23rd, 2011 | Author: admin

Take time to get a flu vaccine The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses.

If you are high-risk, take the time to get a flu vaccine High risk includes young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease and people 65 years and older and especially health care workers.

Children younger than 6 months cannot be vaccinated Caregivers for children younger than six months should get a flu vaccination instead.

Take everyday precautionary measures to avoid spreading the flu This includes avoiding close contact with sick people, not touching your eyes nose or mouth (this spreads the flu) and staying home if you come down with the flu.

Take antivirals if your doctor prescribes them If you come down with the flu, your doctor might prescribe antiviral medication. Take them for the full amount of time prescribed – starting them earlier will produce better results, so make sure to see your doctor if you come down with the flu.
